I’m in it for life…
From the age of 10, I have been active on behalf of animals in every way possible — from their hands-on rescue to their plight on the world stage, in legislation, education, as a student and a teacher, through my writing and my graphic design, on foot and behind the scenes — and I’m only getting warmed up. Despite the ongoing and sometimes demoralizing task at hand, I still expect to change the world. Will you help me do that?
Animal Rights Activist at Large…
I began my activism for animals in La Paz, Bolivia, at the age of 10, determined to defend the hapless street dogs by hiding them from shooters, and by ‘relocating’ other animals to prevent their slaughter. As an early teen, I was actively involved in petitioning the Canadian government to end the annual baby seal slaughter. And by high school, I had already acquired a chapter of The Fund for Animals and used it to educate my community about the plight of animals worldwide.
In college, now a vegetarian, I wanted to be a teacher of animal rights, but the California State University pretty much laughed me off its campus (the laugh is on them now, of course, because animal rights is taught in many of the major colleges and universities in the country).
But I decided to teach in another way. Using my talent and experience of combining pictures with the right words, I created fliers and newspaper ads, as well as newsletters, posters, and bumper stickers, etc., which eventually led to my creation of a magazine still in print today. I’ve since transferred my graphics skill to the Internet.
From an undercover agent for the New Jersey SPCA, to a lobbyist for animal protective legislation in every state I’ve ever lived in, to hands-on rescue of wild horses, to magazine and web site publishing, I’ve been an activist for animals for 40-plus years now. I know in my heart of hearts that I want to do ONE thing now and do it better than I’ve ever done it. That one thing, despite all the interferences, is what I’ve always done: make the voice of animals heard around the world.
Beyond The Animals Voice
I am active in more than just The Animals Voice. Using my graphic design and videomaking skills, I produce web sites for others, as well as books, videos, newsletters, fliers, etc.
Here are some of the individuals and organizations I’ve created product for:
Jonathan Balcombe is the author of four books, including Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good, Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals, and The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure.
One of my heroes is Sudhir Amembal, the man responsible for my time spent learning web design, as well as a great friend and fellow activist. I designed his Animal Advisory web site to help him, in return. Animal Advisory is a free business-consulting service for animal welfare and rights organizations outside the United States.
The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC) is just one of my contributions to wild horse defense. I was also the co-founder of an organization that single-handedly relocated 236 wild horses from southeastern Oregon in order to prevent their slaughter in the desert. My equine rescue endeavors have resulted in the salvation of some several thousand horses.
Darling Vet Clinic
For a decade, I rescued slaughter-bound horses and cared for them in my backyard. Over the years, I was aided by my veterinarian, Dr. Gary Darling, so I designed a web site for his business. Gary is also one of my heroes; he has a genuine passion and love for animals.
Return to Freedom American Wild Horse Sanctuary
Return to Freedom is dedicated to preserving the freedom, diversity and habitat of America’s wild horses through sanctuary, education, and conservation, while enriching the human spirit through direct experience with the natural world. It has been a pleasure to design its web site and other published material.
My welfare work isn’t limited to animals. I have also been an activist for women’s rights, gay rights, human rights, and a host of other human-centered causes. Some years ago, for example, I designed a web site for the welfare of farm workers.
Apartheid, the Sudan… you name it, I have had some role in furthering human rights, too.
