Mexico City has become the latest place in Mexico to ban the use of animals in circuses. The city council voted overwhelmingly for the prohibition, which carries fines of $45,000 to $60,000.
Alternattiva Demokratika meet junior minister for animal welfare and present proposals on the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses. Green Party officials today met the parliamentary secretary for animal welfare, Roderick Galdes, to present their proposals concerning animals and circuses.
Based on sworn affidavits from numerous people who report witnessing handlers with the notoriously cruel Kelly Miller Circus whipping and striking animals during its recent tour of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey—including a June 17 stop in Lakehurst—PETA has submitted a formal complaint to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for multiple and repeated apparent violations of the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
Circuses will be banned from using wild animals, the government announced. From December 2015, only dogs, cats, rabbits, and other “domesticated” animals in Britain will be allowed in travelling circuses. The announcement follows mounting pressure on the government with overwhelming Commons support for a blanket ban.
Animal rights groups that sued the producer of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will have to pay attorney fees, a federal judge has ruled. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan of Washington, D.C., did not yet decide how much is owed, the National Law Journal reports. The circus producer, Feld Entertainment Inc., says it has spent more than $20 million defending itself in the suit claiming that the circus was abusing its elephants.
A zoo in Argentina is under fire for allowing visitors to have extra close contact with their wild animals, even letting them cuddle tigers and rub noses with lions. The Lujan Zoo is known for having very tame animals, many believe they sedate them but the zoo insists they are calm due to good training and being constantly fed.
Rodeo groups from across the country are uniting for the first time under the banner of the Australian Rodeo Federation. The organisation will represent at least 450 rodeo events and 4,200 members nationally. Executive Director of the Australian Professional Rodeo Association, Glen Mansfield, says ongoing pressure from animal rights groups has prompted the move.
An animal rights group on Tuesday called for Taiwan’s largest aquarium to immediately release a whale shark in its care to prevent physical and psychological damage, which the groups said could result from the creature’s extended captivity in a small tank.

A traveling circus is defending its decision to visit Stanton this week despite a call from animal rights group urging the public to boycott the event. Circus Mondao has pitched up camp behind The White Horse, in Woodland Road, ready for its first night on Wednesday – however animal rights group Animal Defenders International (ADI) is hoping for a boycott over travelling conditions.
An animal rights group is circulating an online petition asking Park Police to stop deer culling in Montgomery County. The petition, titled “Tell Montgomery County Park Police to stop wounding and killing resident deer,” had received 623 signatures on Change.org as of March 5. The petition includes a photo of the deer, which is graphic.
